Catherine Johnstone CBE, Chief Executive of Royal Voluntary Service explains why this is such an exciting role and who would make an ideal Chief Marketing Officer.
Chief Executive's Welcome Message
Thank you for your interest in joining Royal Voluntary Service as our new Chief Marketing Officer.

You are considering joining us at a pivotal moment in our history. We have recently launched our new ten-year strategy, Vision 2035, with a clear and ambitious goal: the mobilisation of millions of volunteers to build a better-connected, more resilient Britain. While our heritage dates back to 1938, today we are an organisation defined by innovation, digital transformation and bold partnerships.

This is not a role for someone content with maintaining the status quo. We are breaking new ground with the launch of GoVo, a pioneering digital volunteering marketplace designed to remove friction from the sector. It is already hosting thousands of opportunities and attracting attention from international heads of state and major corporate partners. We are actively pushing boundaries to ensure volunteering remains relevant for the next generation, from working with ITV on national campaigns to engaging younger audiences on TikTok. Equally, we are proud of our deep relationship with the Royal Household which keeps our work at the forefront of national life.

Who am I looking for? I am looking for a Chief Marketing Officer who brings creativity, strategic vision and digital expertise but, above all, I am looking for someone with a genuine passion for volunteering and ambition to make a difference on a large stage.

To succeed here, you must believe in the power of connecting people, whether that is helping businesses engage their employees or empowering young people to build confidence through service. We are looking for a leader who values kindness and authenticity as much as professional capability. Ours is a culture of partnership where success is shared and where we lift each other up to deliver for the communities we serve.

You will become a key member of our Chief Officer Group, operating within a distributed leadership model. This means you will not just be running a marketing function; you will be helping to lead the organisation. You will work alongside peers who are values-driven, supportive and deeply committed to our mission.

We actively encourage applications from candidates of all backgrounds who feel they meet the professional requirements of the role and share our commitment to community service.

If you are a collaborative leader who thrives on ambiguity, who wants to use your skills to drive social change and who leads with heart, I would be delighted to see your application.

This is a rare opportunity to shape the narrative of one of Britain’s most important institutions. Thank you in advance for your time to look at this opportunity and I look forward to meeting you.

About the Chief Marketing Officer
Overall purpose of the role:

Royal Voluntary Service (RVS) has been at the heart of volunteering since 1938 — from mobilising volunteers in times of crisis to driving national innovation in community engagement. As we embark on the next chapter of our 2025–2035 strategy, RVS is focused on creating a future where volunteering is accessible to everyone. Through the launch of GoVo, our new digital volunteering platform funded by People’s Postcode Lottery, we are building the infrastructure for “volunteering for all” - connecting causes, volunteers and employers at scale, and working with others, we are seeking to shape a modern movement for social good.
